FOUNDER
Late HAJI. Rtn.(PHF).Dr.L. KAMAL BATCHA., M.B.H.S., D.Pharm.,
(12.08.1940 to 08.08.2020)
FOUNDER CHAIRMAN, NATIONAL PHARMA GROUP
The company National Pharma a pharmaceutical manufacturing unit was started at Thanjavur early in 1967 with a single allopathic formulation in a syrup base named “MALVIRONE” (contained Malt, Iron, Vit A and D3 in a syrup base) as haematinic tonic for children and adults .
The company grew steadily with its strong foot to start its second modern unit in 1978 at the same place where we are all witnessing its beauty and shape together with all its wings now spread all over India and at abroad also with nearly 40 products to be manufactured under one roof.
It was an Allopathic unit where the founder Mr. L. Kamal Batcha was the sole properitor of this unit, spreading its wings all over India and in Abroad also with Ayurvedic Medicines to its credit. This was the first unit in Tamil Nadu to win International Asia Award At Singapore in 1983 for its Best Quality products, Research and Industrial Management etc.
The research (R&D ) was its main function to ensure quality of medicines (products) at all levels. Thus the company won many awards from State as well as central government respectively including 2 times (1991 & 1995) winner of prestigious Jamnalal Bajaj Award .
The Joint venture at abroad was the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu even in All India Level. Thus the company received appreciation from all quarters of leading medical professionals and others in the field of medicine manufacturing and marketing successfully.
Dr. L. Kamal Batcha (LKB) masterfully blended ancestral wisdom with cutting-edge technology, creating a unique approach that resonated with both medical professionals and the general public. Here’s how he achieved this remarkable feat:
1. Preserving Active Ingredients:
While embracing modern methodologies in the manufacturing process, LKB remained committed to preserving the active ingredients found in traditional Ayurvedic formulations by using time-tested extraction methods, he ensured that the final products retained their efficacy and authenticity.
2. Clinical Trials and Safety Assessment:
As a qualified pharmacist, LKB conducted rigorous drug trials at various government hospitals. His goal was twofold: to assess safety and to demonstrate the therapeutic efficacy of his Ayurvedic products. The results of these trials were not only promising but also garnered attention from leading medical journals, including ANTISEPTIC.
3. Unprecedented Global Approval:
Driven by enthusiasm, confidence, and passion, LKB conducted approximately 11 original clinical trials. These trials, conducted under the supervision of prominent medical doctors, unequivocally demonstrated the effectiveness of his products. Remarkably, LKB’s Ayurvedic formulations received testing and approval in five foreign countries—an extraordinary achievement for a Small Scale Industry (SSI) based in Tamil Nadu during the 1990s.
4. Credibility and Recognition:
Despite being an SSI unit, the credibility of LKB’s research is evident. His trials were meticulously carried out in government medical colleges, with sample populations carefully selected by clinicians and experts. The unbiased selection of cases underscores the scientific rigor of these studies. Notably, the findings from LKB’s research have already been accepted and published in leading medical journals—an accomplishment considering that such journals typically focus on allopathic research.
Exporting Ayurvedic Drugs and Establishing a Global Manufacturing Unit
Armed with confidence and in-depth knowledge, our Founder Chairman, Dr. L. Kamal Batcha (LKB) extended his research activities to include the export of Ayurvedic drugs. His endeavors not only earned foreign exchange but also enhanced India’s reputation and goodwill. Despite stringent import standards and regulations, Indian products gained popularity in foreign markets—an impressive achievement for a Small-Scale Industry (SSI) based in India.
National Pharma, under LKB’s leadership, offered a product range that included both allopathic and Ayurvedic formulations in liquid and capsule forms. These products found their way to major headquarters hospitals in states like Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, and Kerala. Additionally, they reached Defense and Central Government Hospitals in North India through the Central Government Health Scheme. Even Defense (Military) Hospitals across the country benefited from these high-quality offerings.
Foreign and Indian doctors alike appreciated LKB’s innovative formulas, positioning National Pharma as a trailblazer in the pharmaceutical industry. His nation-building efforts during the 1980s and 1990s stand as commendable contributions to India’s growth.
In response to the soaring demand for his products, LKB took a groundbreaking step—the establishment of a modern, fully automatic Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Unit in Melaka, Malaysia. This move was unprecedented in India and showcased the quality of Indian manufacturing on the global stage. Collaborating with the prestigious conglomerate M/S. LION GROUP SDN BHD of Malaysia, LKB ensured that the manufacturing unit was named after his successful product, VITARITE, in Malaysia—a testament to its significance and ongoing demand in a fiercely competitive market.
Appreciation flowed in from various organizations in Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, recognizing LKB’s tireless efforts in promoting Indian medicine through the theme “Ayurveda and You.”
Dr. L. Kamal Batcha (LKB) maintained a close relationship with doctors and actively engaged in the manufacturing field. His commitment extended beyond product development, as he sponsored numerous state and national-level medical conferences across various specialties and associations. Notably, the Indian Medical Association benefited from his support.
During that era, senior doctors widely acknowledged and appreciated LKB’s contributions. His efforts facilitated knowledge exchange, collaboration, and advancements in medical practices. By fostering these connections, LKB played a vital role in strengthening the healthcare community.
